The ups and downs of writing a book

It feels strange to announce so publicly that I’m writing a book. I couldn’t even say it for the first 2.5 years into my “creative project” (that’s what I call my book when I’m feeling the most severe effects of imposter syndrome). Writing a book. The words feel like mud in my mouth. But that’s what I’m doing and I’m trying to get more comfortable with talking about it.

I started my book in July 2019, and I realized I haven’t been documenting my journey very well. This year, I’m filming weekly updates on my progress. I started on January 1st and I plan to record a video diary entry every Saturday until December 31st. Time passes by too quickly, and I think my future self will appreciate having these updates to look back on, regardless of whether this book comes to fruition.

These short check-ins are starting to help already. I’m getting more familiar with the ups and downs of my mood, as well as the ebbs and flows of my motivation. Some days, I feel inspired and excited about my book. Other days, I feel defeated and full of self-doubt. It’s all part of the journey.

If you’d like to watch some or all of my weekly updates, you can find the videos here. A caveat: they’re very rambly. I don’t really know what I’m doing.
