The Joy of Missing Out
The Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) is a concept I discovered recently. I first heard about JOMO in a podcast, but I've since seen and heard the term in a variety of different contexts. I've been trying to practice JOMO more often in the past few months, and it has provided me with a happier and healthier outlook on life.
JOMO has benefited my life in so many ways — the main benefits as they relate to shopping are:
Benefit #1: Accumulate less clutter.
One joy of missing out on a sale or deal (or just shopping in general) is that you won’t accumulate a bunch of stuff that you’ll end up not using. You won’t need to donate it later… or even worse, throwing it into the garbage and adding to landfill. Feel the joy of missing out on that clutter and extra stuff.
Benefit #2: Save money.
Another joy of missing out is saving money. When you don’t buy something, you are saving the money you would have spent on the item. This can add up to significant savings over the years. And you can save your money for something you really want in the future.
Benefit #3: Have more time to do the things you love that don't involve shopping.
The final joy of missing out relates to having more time. Shopping can be quite a time-consuming process, especially if you are reading reviews, comparison shopping, trying to find items to add to your cart to meet minimum shopping requirements, and more. When you experience the joy of missing out on shopping, you can spend your found time doing the things you really love — chatting with friends, reading a book, or doing some self-reflection. :)
