Timeline
Jan 30/19: I received Spider Plant 001 at a self-care workshop with Darryl Cheng at the Onsite Gallery. Little did I know at the time, that this little buddy would spark a full-blown houseplant obsession a year and a half later.
Spider Plant 001 when it joined our family on Jan 30/19.
Oct 8/19: There’s some new growth that looks different — could it be a baby?
Nov 15/19: Clearly a baby.
Jun 9/20: I propagated the spiderette in soil and you can follow its journey here.
Jul 5/20: It’s time for Spider Plant 001 to move into a bigger pot. This appeared to be long overdue as the plant was severely root bound. I untangled the roots as best I could and planted it into some fresh potting soil.
Jul 5/20: Spider Plant 001 was severely root bound.
Jul 10/20: Spider Plant 001 gets its first haircut! I’d never pruned this plant before and it was quite terrifying at first, but it felt good to remove the damaged leaves. I’m going to try propagating some of the growth along the spiderette’s stem as I didn’t know whether to cut it off before. Let’s see if the leaves root.
Jul 9/20: Spider Plant 001 before its first haircut.
Jul 10/20: Spider Plant 001 after its first haircut. I also did this little propagation experiment here.
Aug 6/20: Spider Plant 001 seems really happy in its new pot with the new potting mix. Look how much it’s grown! The longest leaf poking out to the right in this photo is literally longer than my forearm.
Sep 9/20: Looks like Spider Plant 001 is going to have another baby…
Sep 20/20: Wheeeee! It is indeed another baby!
Sep 20/20: Baby close up.
Oct 12/20: Spider Plant 001’s baby is getting really big. This spiderette is much bigger than the one last year. Ooooh I’m excited.
Oct 12/20: Close up of the spiderette. I didn’t realize spider plants flower but it looks like there may have been a couple of little white blooms at the base of the spiderette (one shown in the above photo). These blooms have since dried up.
Nov 29/20: So many babies on Spider Plant 001! I’ll need to propagate some of these soon because they’re getting quite heavy on the plant.
Nov 29/20: Spider Plant 001 produced another flower with this little spiderette.
Nov 29/20: A closer look at the flower.
Feb 7/21: Spider Plant 001 is HUGE and has so many spiderettes. It’s time to propagate a few of them.
Feb 7/21: Here’s the biggest spiderette. I propagated this one and will be tracking its progress here.
Feb 7/21: I also propagated two smaller spiderettes and you can see what they look like planted together here.
